Gender defines guide-pin mating, not link polarity
An MPO/MTP male ferrule carries alignment pins and a female ferrule is unpinned; direct mating requires one pinned and one unpinned side. US Conec product specifications list gender, key orientation and fibre count as separate attributes, so each field must be defined independently. [3] [4] [5]
Gender also does not mean “equipment end” or “cable end.” Identify the real mating part first, then specify each assembly end. “Male to female” alone is not enough to release a drawing without port references, adapter details and viewing direction.

During early design, unknown fields may remain “open for mating review,” but should not be replaced with assumed defaults. After sample approval, guide pins, key orientation, end face and channel map should be frozen in the same drawing revision.

MPO interface purchasing FAQ
Is an MPO male connector always used at the equipment end?
No. Gender describes the guide-pin arrangement, not whether an end belongs to equipment or cable. Check the equipment port, mating-part reference or interface drawing before specifying each assembly end.
Can two male or two female MPO connectors mate directly?
They should not be specified for direct mating. A standard mating pair uses one pinned and one unpinned ferrule. Do not force a connection; verify the mating part, adapter and approved drawing.
Does key-up / key-down mean polarity method A / B?
No. Key orientation describes mechanical orientation; polarity describes the channel map across the complete link. They are related inputs but not interchangeable terms.
Does a green housing always prove APC?
Housing color is only an identification aid. It does not replace the part number, end-face marking, product data sheet or approved drawing. Specify APC or UPC explicitly.
Can MPO-16 use the same adapter as MPO-12?
Do not assume interchangeability. MPO-16 and common single-row MPO interfaces use different interface and key-orientation provisions. Verify the complete connector and adapter part numbers and their standards.
