Confirm equipment and mating parts before freezing cable configuration
MPO-12 and MPO-16 are not interchangeable simply because one has more fibres. IEC 61754-7-1 covers a single-row MPO interface, while IEC 61754-7-3 covers two rows of 16 fibres; selection starts with the equipment port, mating part and standard.
When equipment requires MPO-16, a common MPO-12 trunk, adapter or key orientation cannot be treated as a default substitute. Record interface form, end face, gender, key orientation, fibre type and lane map separately on the drawing.

Can MPO-16 plug directly into an MPO-12 adapter?
Compatibility should not be assumed. Verify the interface standard, key orientation and complete adapter reference.
Is MPO-16 only used for 800G?
Do not infer an interface from data rate. Official 400G and 800G portfolios can use different interface combinations.
Is polarity the same for MPO-12 and MPO-16?
Polarity is an end-to-end map; it is not created automatically by fibre count and must be checked across the full link.
What is most often missed in an RFQ?
The remote module, adapter reference, key orientation and viewing direction.
